When you try to upgrade your Windows 7 machine to Windows 10 the installation might get stuck during the “checking for updates” fase. This is caused by Windows 7 downloading other updates in the background preventing the Windows 10 installation to continue. In order to resolve this you should simply stop the Windows update service:
